South Central Power Outage Map: How to Track Outages and Keep WiFi Running

EcoFlow

South Central Power Company is a member-owned electric cooperative serving more than 125,000 homes, businesses, and farms across 24 counties in Ohio. This area can face a variety of severe weather events, including high winds, thunderstorms, snow, ice, and lightning — all of which can trigger power outages.

These outages can strike without warning, but knowing how you can track them and keep your devices online, even when the grid is down, makes a real difference in your ability to stay connected.

Below, we cover the South Central Power Outage Map, the best reporting tools, common causes of outages, and your best backup power options to stay connected.

What the South Central Power Outage Map Shows

The South Central Power Outage Map is an interactive online map available at outage.southcentralpower.com on your desktop or smartphone.

On the map, you'll see any current outage locations displayed by area and outage clusters across the service territory.

You can use the map to confirm if an outage is isolated to your address, your neighborhood, or a much wider area.

You can also find estimated restoration times when available, which SCPC updates in near real-time, giving you the most up-to-date, reliable information when the power fails.

While the map helps you understand the scope and expected duration of an outage, having a backup power solution (such as a whole-home generator like the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra X) can help maintain connectivity and essential devices while power is being restored.

How to Check the South Central Power Outage Map

You can access the map by navigating to it from the Outage Center page at southcentralpower.com, or you can visit it directly by typing outage.southcentralpower.com into your internet search bar. You don't need to log in to your account to view the map.

If you're an enrolled South Central member, you can also sign up for an outage texting program, receiving automated alerts when an outage is detected at your meter. You can also text 740-422-6888 with the word "status" or "update" to get the current outage status and restoration estimates.

If you prefer to call, dial 800-282-5064 to report an outage in your area.

Don't rely on email or social media to report an outage, as these channels aren't always monitored.

Understanding Power Outage Updates and Restoration Times

The restoration times and updates you see on the map reflect the estimates based on the assessed damage and crew deployment. These times are subject to change as conditions develop and more information is gathered.

A larger outage affecting more customers typically takes longer to resolve than a smaller and localized outage. Check the map regularly during an outage to get the most reliable information on restoration progress.

South Central may also share updates via email, its website, or local radio and TV, as well as social media during significant events. But the map and the automated text service are still your most reliable sources of information.

Common Causes of Power Outages in the South Central Region

Electricity outages in the South Central Power Region can be caused by a number of different things, from severe weather to infrastructure damage, and even planned outages for scheduled maintenance and upgrades. Some of these common causes include:

  • Severe weather, including high winds, ice storms, and thunderstorms, is the leading cause, often downing trees or damaging electricity lines across rural Ohio.

  • Forested service areas may also be impacted when vegetation comes into contact with power lines, which is why South Central maintains an active vegetation management program to limit issues.

  • Unexpected causes include equipment failures, vehicle accidents involving utility infrastructure, and animal damage.

  • Planned outages may also occur periodically to allow for scheduled maintenance and infrastructure updates.

How to Stay Informed During a Power Outage

Staying informed during a blackout can keep anxiety at bay and create reasonable expectations for restoration.

As soon as you notice an outage at your home, go to the outage map for near-real-time updates and see how large the affected area is.

To remain aware of outages when you might not be home, enroll in South Central Power’s Outage Texting Program to get automatic notifications sent to your phone. You can opt in by using the South Central app or by updating your cell phone number within your account.

Follow South Central's official social media platforms and save local radio stations to get other major event updates, too.

If internet and cellular service are also disrupted, it's smart to keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio on hand, so you can still access pertinent information.

How to Keep WiFi Running During a Power Outage

To keep your WiFi running, you'll need about 10 to 20 watts for a standard home router and modem. This is a relatively modest load that you can easily sustain using battery backup.

However, if your household experiences extended outages, a whole-home generator can help reduce downtime by automatically restoring power to your home’s circuits. This means your router, modem, and other connected devices can continue operating without interruption, keeping your internet connection stable even during longer outages.

Backup Power Solutions That Help During Grid Outages

For short outages, keeping your Wi-Fi running usually only requires a small amount of power, which can be handled by compact battery backups.

For longer outages or when you need to power additional devices, like lights, phones, or small appliances, a higher-capacity system can provide more flexibility.

Portable power stations, such as the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra X, are designed to support a wide range of household needs and can help maintain connectivity alongside other essential systems during extended disruptions.

Features like app-based monitoring and alerts can also help you stay informed and prepared, especially when outages are caused by severe weather.

Preparing for Future Power Outages

Prepare now for future outages by bookmarking the South Central Power Outage Map and saving the reporting number in your phone. You should also enroll in their outage texting service, so any alerts reach you automatically without your intervention.

If backup power is a priority for you, start by assessing which devices matter most during an outage. This might include the internet, medical equipment, refrigeration, and lighting.

From there, choose a solution that matches your needs. A portable power station can help keep essential devices running during short outages, while larger, full-home battery setups are best suited for extended events.

Solutions like the EcoFlow DELTA Series offer flexible options for different household sizes and outage preparedness goals, helping you stay connected and prepared when outages happen.
