Wildfire Home Hardening Grants in California: Free Money to Protect Your House?

EcoFlow

California is one of the states with the highest wildfire risk in the country, with over 2.7 million homes located in high-risk zones. Due to the damage caused by wildfires, state and local governments are offering grant programs to help fund defensive home upgrades. These programs can cover enhancements such as fire-resistant siding, roofing, vents, and other protective modifications.

Money may be available to you; however, the application process will vary depending on your location and funding availability.

What Are California's Home Hardening Grant Programs?

California's Home Hardening Grant Programs can provide California residents with financial assistance to make wildfire defensive property modifications. These programs are designed for homeowners residing in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) zones and other high-severity fire areas.

Some income restrictions apply, prioritizing low- or moderate-income households, but this is not true for every program. Another requirement is that properties must meet basic safety standards and defensible space requirements before initiating upgrades.

Available Grant Programs and Funding Sources

Funding streams are available for home hardening through state, regional, and utility channels.

CAL FIRE and State Programs

The California Safe Homes grant was launched in January 2026 and initiated by the state's Insurance Department. It’s available to low- and moderate-income homeowners who live in high wildfire risk areas and provides funding for homeowners to build new roofs or create fire-resistant zones around their properties.

Another program from CAL FIRE and Cal OES focuses on socially vulnerable communities.

FEMA, in collaboration with Cal OES, has also created the California Wildfire Mitigation Program, which provides federal funding for community-scale home hardening projects in California.

Priority for these grants is given to properties located in very high fire hazard severity zones.

Regional and County-Level Programs

Counties and municipalities also provide additional local programs for assistance. One example is Sonoma County's SoCo Adapts program, which offers rebates of up to $10,000 through FEMA funding for wildfire-hardening upgrades. However, Permit Sonoma is pausing grant activities after September 30, 2026, due to FEMA's discontinuation of the BRIC program.

Another example is the San Rafael Fire Department, which provides grants up to $15,000 per parcel of land over a 10-year period for gradual defensible space and home hardening improvements.

Check with your local municipality or county to see if they have developed localized programs. Availability will vary by county and include different eligibility requirements and available funding.

What Home Improvements Qualify for Funding?

Exterior Upgrades

Exterior upgrades include adding fire-resistant siding to the home, such as stucco, fiber cement, metal, or other masonry materials. You can also enhance your roof with Class A fire-rated materials such as metal tile or treated shingles. Reinforcing windows is also essential.

Other exterior upgrades include:

  • Dual-pane windows with tempered glass

  • Exterior doors made of solid wood or metal

  • Weather sealing

  • Replacing wooden decks with fire-resistant materials

Ventilation and Openings

Ceiling ventilation is key to keeping California wildfires outside, not indoors. Upgrading to roof vents with 1/8 inch mesh screening can prevent embers from entering the home and igniting. Other vents and the soffits or eaves can be upgraded to meet WUI building codes. Other access points include garage doors and crawl spaces.

For garage doors, you can add weather sealing or automatic closing mechanisms to make it easy to bolster the barriers to your home.

Preventing ember accumulation near and on homes is also a top priority. Gutter guards and leaf-resistant drainage systems can prevent the accumulation of embers and keep your home safe from damage.

Additional Qualifying Improvements

Other potentially qualifying improvements include:

  • Managing vegetation in your defensible space

  • Refining your landscaping to be more fire-resistant

  • Water storage tanks and irrigation systems

  • Driveway widening and adding turnaround areas for emergency vehicle access

Beyond Structural Protection: Preparing Your Family for Wildfire Season

Preparing your family for wildfire season goes far beyond structural protection. You should be prepared for these emergencies and know exactly what to do when they occur.

Create a detailed evacuation plan for your family, including multiple escape routes and designated meeting locations both within and outside the neighborhood. Prepare go-bags with essential survival kits that include medications, important documents, clothing, water, and non-perishable food for a 72-hour period. Register for local emergency alerts and weather notifications, so you know about any growing fires before they approach your residence.

Practice these evacuation procedures with all your family members, including pets, so that they become muscle memory and fight-or-flight reactions don't interfere with your plan.

Even if the wildfire doesn't directly affect your home, wildfires cause widespread damage to communities, including extended power outages. Millions of Californians are impacted by these outages annually.

Having backup power on hand is essential for medications that require refrigeration, critical medical devices, and potentially life-saving communication equipment.

portable power station, such as the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra X, can provide silent, carbon monoxide-free electricity for essential devices and appliances. You can pair these power stations with solar panels to create solar generators that offer renewable charging indefinitely during extended outages. Consider investing in a whole-home battery backup system that automatically switches on to maintain critical household functions.

Maximizing Your Investment: Combining Grants with Smart Preparedness

Structural improvements to your home can reduce the risk of ignition; however, comprehensive emergency preparedness is essential to ensure family safety.

Check to see if you qualify for grant-funded upgrades, which will protect your home while increasing your property value and potentially reducing insurance premiums. However, don't forget about a holistic wildfire strategy, including both defensive modifications and evacuation readiness.

The final piece of the puzzle is investing in backup power solutions, which complement structural protection for complete household resilience. The goal is for your house to remain unharmed, but power outages may be out of your control.

Using a power station like the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 can give your family peace of mind even during worrying wildfire seasons.
