Solar Energy in Quebec: Grants, Credits and Backup

EcoFlow

You can use solar energy in Quebec to reduce grid purchases, but the proposed system must suit your home. Solar grants, electricity-bill credits and outage backup each need to be assessed separately.

Before signing, ask the installer to separate those three benefits in the quote. The price should show what you're buying, while the savings estimate explains which costs you could avoid.

Your electricity use, roof conditions and utility rules shape that result, so a rebate headline alone can't settle the decision.

Separate the Solar Grant, Bill Credits and Backup

Keep upfront assistance, electricity-bill offsets and outage protection separate when reviewing a quote. A project can provide one benefit without delivering all three.

The photovoltaic panels produce electricity from sunlight. An inverter and connection equipment determine how that supply serves your home.

The April 2026 announcement for Hydro-Québec's solar-panel grant describes support towards eligible project costs. It also describes net-metering credits in kWh for eligible exports, which can be used later.

Check what each promised benefit actually changes.

What Still Needs Checking

Solar Grant

Utility Bill Credits

Eligible exports can earn electricity credits.

The option's terms and charges that remain on your bill.

Battery Backup

Stores energy for selected compatible loads.

Output, runtime, connection design and recharge options.

A credit on an account doesn't keep a fridge running when the grid fails. That requires a separate backup plan.

Decide What Must Keep Running When the Grid Stops

List the appliances you need during an outage before choosing storage. A conventional grid-connected rooftop system shuts down during an outage unless the design specifically provides backup operation.

A utility credit reduces your electricity bill, it does not provide power during an outage. Stored energy is held in a battery, where output and capacity limit what you can use.

If you want to supply a compatible fridge and other 120 V plug-in devices, house-circuit integration may be unnecessary. The EcoFlow TITAN 5000 Classic provides nominal 5 kWh storage and 4 kW of total rated output for that kind of defined load plan.

Check running power, startup demand and individual outlet limits. Classic supplies 120 V only, so it doesn't cover a 240 V appliance or promise a fixed outage duration.

EcoFlow TITAN 5000 Classic
1. 4,000W Whole-Home Essential Power. Run your fridge, microwave, Wi-Fi, lighting, and CPAP all at once. 2. 5–30kWh Expandable Capacity. Get 1 day to 1 week of essential backup. Add batteries anytime, with no installer needed. 3. <30 dB. Quiet enough for indoor use—quieter than a whisper. 4. ≤20 ms Automatic Switchover. The lights don’t even flicker. 5. OASIS 3.0 — Your AI-based Home Energy Manager. Charges off-peak, powers your home during peak hours, and helps lower your electricity bill every day.

A selected circuit that needs 240 V raises a different connection question. The EcoFlow TITAN 5000 offers 120 V/240 V output and 7.2 kW of total rated power. Circuit backup needs the compatible Smart Home Panel 10 (240 V), a qualified, licensed electrician and load checks.

Starting storage is also 5 kWh. Higher output allows more power at once, but doesn't establish longer runtime. Treat these models as alternatives, not a connected pair.

UL 9540 certified and tested to UL 9540A, with EV-grade LFP cells and 24/7 BMS monitoring.

Have the installer verify existing-rooftop compatibility and outage recharging separately. Daily solar integration doesn't prove that the roof can recharge the battery when the grid stops.

Work Out What the Grant Changes in Your Quote

Check Quebec's 2026 solar-panel grant against verified eligible costs before subtracting assistance from a quote. The complete invoice isn't automatically the amount the program accepts.

Check Which Costs the Program Accepts

Ask the installer to verify the building, purchase requirements, equipment, contractor qualifications and installation date against the current LogisVert guide. Request the supporting documents before relying on a grant estimate.

The April announcement includes residential installations from 30 June 2025, subject to program conditions. It also requires official grid-connection authorisation. Those points don't establish that every item on your invoice qualifies.

Keep panels, roof work, electrical upgrades, fees, taxes and optional storage itemised. Ask which amounts enter the eligible base and who confirms them.

Apply Both Limits to the Same Project

The announced base support is $1,000 CAD per installed kW, capped at 40% of eligible costs. Calculate both limits and use the lower amount, rather than adding them together.

These hypothetical examples assume the stated capacity and eligible costs. All amounts are CAD.

Neither row is an installed-price estimate or an approved award. A quoted battery expense doesn't join the eligible base without program support.

The separate Rénoclimat fixed-battery measure has its own rules.

Its fixed-installation conditions exclude transportable batteries and set permanent-connection and other technical requirements. Don't assume either TITAN setup qualifies or that solar and battery assistance can be combined.

Ask How Much of Your Bill Solar Can Actually Offset

Require a savings estimate based on your electricity use and applicable tariff. Annual generation alone doesn't show how much of the bill you can avoid.

Ask for monthly production, the share used directly and the share exported. The Quebec government's solar explanation describes why production varies with the season. Keep power, measured in kW, separate from energy, measured in kWh.

For illustration, assume an array produces 6,000 kWh over a year. Your home uses 4,000 kWh directly and exports 2,000 kWh. Those amounts add to 6,000 kWh, so the exported portion can't also count as direct-use savings.

This example allocates energy. It doesn't estimate your roof's yield, a credit's cash value or a household tariff.

Have the quote explain how credits apply to your account and which charges remain. Include financing and upkeep in the cost comparison, along with any storage losses.

Compare a solar-only price with a solar-plus-backup price. Keeping selected devices available during an outage may matter to you, but that benefit isn't another electricity-bill saving.

Set the Approval and Payment Sequence Before You Sign

Agree who handles utility acceptance, installation and the grant paperwork before committing money. A sales quote doesn't establish utility approval.

Use CMEQ's solar-installation licensing explanation to check the contractor's scope. Electrical qualifications alone don't cover every rooftop-installation task, so confirm the right licences for each part.

Set out the project milestones in writing with the installer and serving utility:

  1. Identify the utility, project owner and contractors responsible for each part.

  2. Confirm the current acceptance requirements and what must happen before equipment purchases or deposits.

  3. Assign installation, inspection and compliance work to the appropriately qualified contractors.

  4. Obtain final utility connection authorisation before the system is connected.

  5. Keep the invoices and required documents for the applicable assistance process.

Compare the itemised quote with the complete solar-array components your design needs. It should identify equipment, mounting, roof and electrical work, utility steps, taxes, exclusions and warranty responsibilities.

Ask for written answers before accepting payment milestones:

  • Who owns the utility application and tracks its decision?

  • What happens to the deposit if the proposed design is refused?

  • Who confirms grant eligibility and documents a change in scope?

  • How do equipment substitutions or required upgrades change the final price?

Keep the backup equipment and connection method in that written scope too.

Reject a Quote That Hides Winter and Upkeep Costs

Ask for winter production assumptions and ongoing responsibilities before accepting an annual savings figure. Cold can improve panel efficiency slightly, but short days, weaker sunlight and snow still affect production.

Site-specific solar design factors include roof condition, shade, structural needs and access. Request monthly estimates rather than assuming a strong summer result applies throughout the year.

Get these upkeep questions answered in the quote:

  • What happens when the roof needs repair or the panels need removal and reinstallation?

  • Who handles inverter service, monitoring faults and warranty claims?

  • What insurance changes or exclusions need checking?

  • Who provides safe maintenance access when snow or ice is present?

Don't climb onto the roof to clear panels or assume snow always slides off.

Battery placement needs a separate check. Both featured TITAN models need a dry, ventilated indoor location. Their charging range is 0 °C to 45 °C, while discharge is rated from -10 °C to 45 °C. Don't assume an unheated garage stays within those limits.

Sign Only After the Three Benefits Add Up

Request a revised quote showing the eligible-cost calculation, realistic bill offsets and a separate outage-load plan. If key assumptions remain unanswered, delaying the purchase keeps those uncertainties out of your commitment.

For solar energy in Quebec, the next step is to obtain a detailed written quote rather than rely on headline savings claims. If your load plan calls for stored backup energy, compare the EcoFlow TITAN range with the installer-confirmed connection and placement requirements.

FAQs

What solar-panel grant is available in Quebec in 2026?

Hydro-Québec announced base support of $1,000 CAD per installed kW, capped at 40% of eligible costs. Your project must meet the current program conditions, so that formula alone doesn't establish an award.

Is solar energy worth it with Quebec's electricity rates?

It depends on the complete net cost, site production, tariff and upkeep. Compare a quote against your actual bill, and assess the value of outage backup separately from electricity savings.

Does Hydro-Québec buy all the electricity my panels produce?

No. You may use some electricity directly, while eligible exported surplus can earn kWh credits under net metering. Check your option's terms rather than assuming a cash payment for every kWh produced.

Can I receive a grant for a battery as well as solar panels?

Don't assume both forms of aid apply or can be combined. The solar program and fixed-battery measure have separate conditions, and a 5 kWh label doesn't establish that the proposed installation qualifies.

Can I buy equipment before Hydro-Québec approves my project?

Confirm the utility's current acceptance requirements before paying or ordering. A retailer's assurance isn't utility approval, and the installer still needs final connection authorisation before connecting the system.
