Schengen Zone Changes 2026: What the ETIAS Means for US Travelers

EcoFlow

Planning a trip to Europe just got a bit more complicated. Starting in late 2026, Americans visiting the Schengen Zone will face new entry requirements under the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

Combined with the new EU Entry and Exit System (EES), these updates will affect border crossings, travel timelines, and documentation requirements. This guide explains what ETIAS is, who it applies to, when it launches, and how US travelers can prepare.

What Is the Schengen Zone?

The Schengen Zone comprises 29 European countries that have abolished internal border controls, allowing citizens to travel freely within the zone, like they would within a single country. The Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, as well as some non-member countries, including Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Currently, most non-EU countries require a visa to enter the Schengen area. Exceptions include some non-EU countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, which are part of the Schengen area. Additionally, nationals of certain countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are currently allowed to travel there with just a passport (no visa required).

New Changes for Schengen Zone Travel in 2026

Europe has announced major changes for 2026 with the introduction of ETIAS, which will apply to all visa-exempt travelers, including US citizens.

What Are the EES and ETIAS?

The EES is the EU’s Entry and Exit System implemented in October 2025. The EES collects your fingerprints, facial image, passport details, and entry and exit dates upon entry and stores them digitally. Unlike the United Kingdom’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), required for all US citizens visiting the UK, this system charges no fees and requires no advance authorization.

On the other hand, ETIAS is scheduled to launch in the last quarter of 2026 and will have its own rules. It isn’t a visa, but rather a visa waiver. It's an electronic travel authorization that pre-screens travelers for security.

It applies to all visa-exempt countries that are not members of the EU and is intended to strengthen border security while allowing travelers with good security records to freely access the 29 member countries.

When you're traveling in the EU this year, don’t forget to bring along all your travel essentials. Also, if you're fond of recording travel videos or taking lots of pictures, a compact power source is a good idea. Since large batteries are not allowed on airplanes, you’ll want something like the EcoFlow TRAIL Series, which are compact enough to fit inside your suitcase.

What Will ETIAS Do?

ETIAS is a travel authorization for travelers who do not require a visa to visit Europe. The system is designed to strengthen border security and manage border entry for all visa-exempt travelers in the Schengen region.

Visa-exempt visitors will soon have to pay a fee and undergo additional security checks before they are allowed to enter the EU for business, tourism, medical, or transportation purposes.

What to Know About ETIAS Before Traveling to Europe

  • ETIAS is mandatory for all visa-exempt countries, including the United States.

  • It will take effect in the final quarter of 2026, after which point, you will be denied entry at the border if you don’t have your authorization.

  • Plan to apply for your authorization before booking your tickets or accommodations. Most applications are processed within minutes, but sometimes additional documents or an interview are required, which could delay the process up to 30 days.

  • Complete the ETIAS application online. This is checked against a security database to pre-screen your eligibility for travel.

  • Your authorization will be linked to your passport, and the data will be shared with the EES for border management.

  • If approved, ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, at which time you would need to reapply.

Other Essential EU Travel Tips For Americans

Here are some additional important things to know when traveling to Europe this year:

  • The 90-day stay within any 180-day period limitation will still apply under the new system.

  • If you reach your 90-day maximum, then you must wait an additional 90 days before entering the Schengen area after your maximum stay.

  • For stays longer than three months, you must apply for a visa through the embassy of the country where you will spend the majority of your time.

  • Depending on the destination, minors traveling alone or with just one parent may require additional documentation.

  • If you are a student or a worker, check with the embassy of the country you will be traveling to to find out whether you need a visa.

  • Be sure to understand all the rules regarding what you can bring in checked and carry-on luggage. Also, be sure you understand TSA rules regarding batteries so you can bring your electronic devices onboard.

  • When you get to Europe, you will find that the electrical plugs are different from those in the US. Investing in a universal charging block before leaving is recommended.
